February Fog

A month which could be shortened even further, February. After a few weeks on the ski slopes one can easily turn an eye toward Spring. Warm days and the greening of scenery. Everywhere blossoming with new life and colors.

February always precedes March, an even worse month, possibly the worst of all. The final stretch of cold harsh winds and lackluster light of Winter. "Beware the Ides of March" no doubt! [Unless living in California where perpetual great weather prevails.] On the Midatlantic East Coast people appreciate spring, summer and fall. Far more than people who live in California. Simply because of the changing seasons. Take February, for example, when the wind chill dampens spirit and makes sane people want to remain under the covers. [You would think more children are born in November and December than the other months of the year, given the circumstances.]

February is a good time to consider the condition of your sails, that is if you own a sailboat. Think about whether or not it may be time to replace the mainsail, jib or genoa. Prepare to paint the bottom of the boat (or put in a work order at the marina), in preparation for an early April launch. Check out electronics, mast and rigging in order to take early advantage of fresh spring winds, blue waters and what appears to be a limitless horizon.

Grey days will subside eventually regardless of whether or not preparations are in order for the next transition. Might as well throw another log in the woodstove. Time will evolve all on its own with or without complaint or protest. All that is really lacking is the other person to hunker down under the eiderdown with. Too bad, but then again there is nothing standing in the way of opportunity.
